Henley sits on the sideline of life. What else is a fat kid to do? He’s determined to make a change as he enters high school and summons the courage to take a chance only to have super-jock Axel O’Connell go off on him for being a pathetic slug. Henley nearly calls it quits, but pushes forward, and then something amazing happens; Axel does an abrupt about-face and offers to help Henley lose weight and get in shape. Henley is suspicious of Axel’s motives, but so desperately needs help he takes him up on his offer. He soon discovers Axel has a hidden agenda and it shocks Henley right down to his toes. It is the beginning of an unlikely friendship that forces both boys to see each other in a new light. The Fat Kid is a story of friendship, compassion, and affairs of the heart.

In sitting down to write this review I had a quick look at other books I have read by Mark Roeder and was surprised to realise that this was the 28th one but the first time I've written a review of one of his books. Having looked at the other reviews and seeing that one captured my views pretty well I was tempted not to write one. However, I made a promise to myself to review every book I read this year.
Mr Roeder writes well and it is clear that he is in his comfort zone writing about current and past characters from Verona. I agree with another reviewer that his stories tend to be a bit predictable because of this, but also agree that it is nice seeing how other characters from previous books are going. I particularly like Brendan and Casper.
I did not think that this was Mr Roeder's best work and it doesn't compare to stories like 'The soccer field is empty', 'A better place' and 'Do you know that I love you.' It's a light read that enables the reader to escape the real world for a few hours, a bit like visiting old acquaintances. I am still in two minds about how Mr Roeder has dealt with the main theme of the story - that is body acceptance and seeing who people really are by their actions not their looks. In some respects I found it a bit superficial - ultimately Henley felt better about himself because he lost weight and I think Axel made too quick a transition from conceited jerk to nice guy. That said, I enjoyed the story and I will expect to read a 29th story by Mr Roeder. Recommended read.

Brilliant story! Like all of Mark's books I flew through this! Such a great read and of course the introduction of another set of awesome characters blended with the old. Loved it!
Three boys and a girl. The game is afoot. This time we're back at VHS and it's time for a play. First auditions, then casting, and then...romance.

We get visits from some familiar friends. Nothing more than kissing and eating. 4.0 for Twins!
For 2015, that says a lot!!! Wonderful character development, entertaining plot element; and Brendan, Casper, as well as a little Ethan and Nathan. Adored the new characters of Henley, Axel, Finneas, and Phoenix! Looking FWD to Senior year??? I can only hope!
I've read all the books in Mark's series and this one has become an instant favorite! New characters are introduced in the small town of Verona, it's 2015 and the students are faced with a High School play. Favorites from the past, Casper, Brenden, Dorian, Skye, and a few others, help them along on their journey. Great development, in their intertwined stories, make you wish for more in the future with Henley, Finneas & Axel.
It was OK but that's about all. I did like that he brought back characters that had aged. Casper and Brendan are in their early 50s and late 40s
so we know how their lives have progressed. Connor is now a professional dancer and ballet teacher. I liked the three intertwining stories. They're each told in the first person but I don't think 14 and 15 year old boys speak the way these boys do. It seemed a little formal to me.
While there are some great gay teen romance novels that realistically portray the stress and pain of being young and gay in today's society, this story politely sidesteps these pains and addresses some more common human shortcomings. Such as being different in a conforming teenage society. Like not knowing how to make friends because you have no experience in post-pubescent relationships. Although the ease with which these characters solve their problems and learn to thrive seems to me to be a fantasy, I found it to be a satisfying one. I rate this book as a six star story on a five star scale.
Although predictable this was another excellent book by Mark. Mark introduced several new characters which is always interesting but there were also appearances by several older characters from previous novels, some now middle aged who started out as teens in his earlier novels.. Mark has a way of bringing old and new characters together in a believable way. I recommend this latest novel to all of Marks fans and to non fans alike.
