After reading "In The Spirit Of Black Elk Preserving A Sacred Way", Mr. Lystra's first book in his "Sacred Earth" Series, I was enchanted and could simply not wait to see where the "Angel and the Shaman would take us. I was not disappointed. Mr. Lystra leads us on pathways we would otherwise never experience (in both books.) Mind expanding, thought provoking and profound. I highly recommend.
In an Angel and a Shaman, Torrey chronicles his journey as a Shaman and allows the reader to share in his path of experiences and acquisition of wisdom and a glimpse of the "Sacred Ways". For those that wish to explore both an education and an experience...this is a must read.The book will provide insights into a deeper connection with the earth,others and their personnel spiritual path all the while reading about his journey and lessons.
The ancient truths, that were usually passed on orally, are shared in this book. I look forward to his next installment.

Join Torrey on a spiritual journey into the world of spirit. His style of writing is nonlinear, with it ups and downs through the often inexplicable workings of spirit. He was the student and adopted grandson of Wallace Black Elk, the son of the famous shaman Steven Black Elk. He spent many years in the path of the shaman in which he has had indescribable experiences of sprit. That is indescribable to the uninitiated. His travels have taken him into Mayan mysticism as well as in depth into the Lakota swear lodge. His life has been spent in an attempt to heal his fellow travelers through the sacred sweat lodge. As a modern mystagogue he is writing a series of books in which he shares his insight into the world of spirit as few others have done. Don't miss this journey.
Torrey Lystra’s second book is an impressive meditation on sacred places, locations that evoke special emotions, feelings, and values. Torrey invites his reader to explore the sacred spaces of the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt, the ancient Mayan city of Chichen-Itza, the Australian Uluru-Ayers Rock, and Orcas Island in the San Juan archipelago, part of the state of Washington. Each of these locations becomes a site for Torrey’s spiritual discoveries and an occasion for his teaching of the sacred way.

Torrey’s teacher—Wallace Black Elk--was taught in turn by the great wichasa wacan Nicholas Black Elk, a cousin of Crazy Horse, who was the narrator of Black Elk Speaks. Thus Torrey’s instruction took place within a truly exceptional shamanic lineage. Wallace Black Elk believed in involving people of all races and creeds. He shared the sacred way in ceremonies around the world. Torrey carries on this tradition of sharing and openness by writing books that are available world-wide.
My favorite chapters come more than halfway through the book, beginning with a charming Lakota parable about an inquisitive mouse whose courage kept him on a quest for deeper spiritual truths. In this section, Torrey describes his later encounters with Wallace Black Elk, including their travels to Australia. “A humble man or woman attempts to live fully in the moment with great joy,” Torrey writes. That joy was distilled for me in the chapter “Walking Man,” which displayed the author’s unique ability to describe the interrelatedness of nature and spirit.
“May we find a place in our hearts to love all beings,” he prays in a poem that comprises the penultimate chapter of his book. “May we mend our careless ways/May we nurture you, our Mother the Earth, and each other.” Torrey’s teachings, and his hope for humanity, are encapsulated in this poetic prayer and blessing which resonate throughout this book.
There are so many beautifully written and powerful words that I am overcome and filled with a deep sense of Truth and Love, as Spirit surely is in the very essence of what is delivered to us in "The Angel and a Shaman.
A journey into Torrey's spirtual world. A world that is closely bound to our natural world. A spirtual world that is infinite but experienced in finite world.
I felt so privileged to go on this sacred journey and learn about some of the sacred ways with Torrey through these books. He writes about profound spiritual concepts in an authentic down to earth way. I absolutely loved both of the books from the Sacred Earth series and I read them each in one sitting. I can’t wait for the next one.
