June 1941. Determined that the United States will be prepared for war, Franklin D. Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan orchestrate the most complex espionage organization in history, the Office of Strategic Services. Young and daring, the OSS assemble under a thin camouflage of diplomacy and then disperse throughout the world to conduct their operations. And no operation is more critical than the one being conducted by hotshot pilot Richard Canidy and his half-German friend Eric Fulmar to secure the rare ore that will power a top-secret weapon coveted on both sides of the Atlantic - the atomic bomb.

The Last Heroes A Men at War Novel Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) W E B Griffin Michael Russotto Penguin Audio Books

This is the first book of the Men at War series and if it is an example, it is a story of the Naval connection to the beginning of the OSS and intelligence development later to be the CIA. The primary "actors" are young naval officers with a familiar background as to their education or naval background. Richard "Dick" Caniday and Eric Fulmer all attended elementary school together with Jim Whitttier joining them at St. Marks. Dick and Jim went into the reserves to continue their education while Eric went to Switzerland and Germany following his father's traditions. Ed Bitter and Dick met and were room mates, both serving as IPs [instructor pilot] at Pensacola and from where they were recruited to serve as fighter pilots with the Flying Tigers in China. As with most of Mr. Griffin's books, there is a wide range of social and economic differences, although there is less real economic differences than in other works, with Dick and Eric the lest wealthy and Jim and Ed the most "Comfortable" and Jim a social connection to the Roosevelt family. This book touches on the earlier days setting up the OSS, the development of the atomic bomb, an Occupied France and diplomatic relations as each side jockeys for the best position and advantage. It also focuses on the relationships, character/personality similarities and differences, the families, females and connections of this group of young men as they experience- separately and together -professional sailor vs reserve sailor; service in China, the early days of the Philippines, Washington Bureaucracy and cronyism & the setting up for US invasion of Africa.

The Last Heroes A Men at War Novel Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) W E B Griffin Michael Russotto Penguin Audio Books Reviews

I have read ALL of Griffin's books, some over and over again. This series started out great (under the pen name of Alex Baldwin, I understand). The successive fill-ins were not bad, some good, some not good. I don't know if it is the involvement of Butterworth IV but they increasingly made me angry because of three or four factors
1. Increasing use of cut and paste to fill in detail (too much) from, previous stories. A succinct summary would be better - even better referring out-of-place readers to a previous installment- accompanied by a general deterioration in writing that is typical of ghost written stuff. The last Cletus Frade story suffered badly from this - marketing this crap on the reputation of the original author is robbery.

2. Poor research. For example Cannidy is in Gander looking for a ride. The RAF or RCAF Station Commander would have been a Group Captain (Bull colonel) but he is referred to as "Captain", a distinctly lower rank. At any rate the station CO would hardly be involved in transient priorities. There would be a "movements officer" who would have had the last word on priorities on Canadian and British aircraft. There would have been a US Army Air Corps officer to handle US personnel on US aircraft. At any rate, at this time Gander was primarily a ferry refueling stop and not an air transport hub.

3. Griffin in this series has Capt. Whittaker assigned to go test General Fertig's bonafides in the Phillipines and take him gold, medical supplies and some weapons. The beach might have been crowded as McCoy was doing the same task in the Semper Fi series. Sloppy sloppy!

4. Operation Mincemeat (The Man Who Never Was) was strictly a Brit operation. Although Ian Fleming had a very small part in creating a list of dodges, he had nothing to do with the later part. Peter Ustinov and David Niven had nothing to do with it. The fictional OSS place in England had nothing to do with it - it was strictly a Brit operation, although Eisenhower's approval was sought. I don't know where the copyright sits but this plot theft is egregrious crap. Griffin's otherwise excellent work is spoiled either by Butterworth IV or the desire of the publisher to make more money. Much like the Tom Clancy efforts have been spoiled by the ghost writing factory capitalizing on the earlier product. Shame! Shame!

5. The airbase in Cairo would have been an RAF base. In my several years of experience, the only fields that have the kind of follow-me vehicles are on US bases, navy and air. Griffin uses them everywhere.

Summary The earlier excellent works by Griffin have been sullied by this latest crasp. I see there is a new Matt Payne book coming - I shall avoid it for the same reasons - the master's hand is no longer on the tiller.
Not Griffins best book but does give a good background on the formation of the OSS (CIA). This is t e first book of a round to provide some backg7 book series so a lot of time is spent on introduction of characters which makes it a little slow in the beginning but it speeds up in the last part. I am reading Book 2 of the series now & we'll see if it gets better. It should. This series, along with others by Griffin, should provide a good understanding of the origin of the OSS & CIA & what they are supposed to do. This series should some background to the atomic bomb saga which is introduced in this book. RAG
I really liked this first installment of the "Men at War" series. Essentially, this is a novel of the beginning of the storied Office of Strategic Services, which was America's first modern espionage service. This one features extremely complex characterizations and a realistic plot and storyline that held my interest, despite the somewhat slow and leisurely pace with which the novel unfolds. I enjoyed myself very much with this novel. It kept me entertained and wanting more. Recommended. RJB.
I can't understand how this book averages four stars. Okay, the writing is crisp and moves you along, and the dialogue is, at times, very witty. But if you are looking for a WW2 action novel, forget it. If you are looking for a WW2 espionage novel, forget it. The best way I can describe this novel is "Who's Who Goes to War" or "Vanity Fair Goes to War."

Every character is either a member of America's elite class or closely connected to them. Thus, we read more about drinking, dinner parties, chauffeured cars and indiscriminate sex than we do about actual warfare or espionage. I got so sick of reading that so-and-so is married to a cousin of President Roosevelt's, so he was invited to the White House. This is like reading the society pages, with a bit of war and espionage thrown in.

Please...if you are looking for WW2 action, watch "Saving Private Ryan." If you are looking for WW2 espionage, read Follett's "Jackdaws" or "Eye of the Needle." But if you want to read about how some Annapolis grads eat steak, drink old Scotch, dine with the Roosevelts and have sex with anything that moves, by all means pick up "The Last Heroes."
